Love it or hate it, as a huge global brand, McDonald’s around the world has been successful in adapting its menus for local populations.
Have you ever wondered what your regular Maccies meal would look like on the other side of the world?
During our travels we decided, out of curiosity, to check out what was different and what we may or may not be missing out on back home. Putting the unfamiliar menu items to the test.
In this edition of Mcdonald’s around the world, we are giving feedback on Malaysian menu items!
Bubur Ayam

Lorna:
Rice porridge with chicken bits, spring onion sprinkled on top & sachet of white pepper provided for sprinkling.
Rice porridge in a liquid that tasted almost like weak chicken stock. Quite bland but nice for porridge and I’m a rice advocate so I preferred it to normal oaty porridge. The spring onions and chicken gave two different textures to the sloppy rice. It isn’t something I’d probably order again at a McDonald’s

Nothing you would ever expect from Maccies at home and something in truth I would never consider ordering even if it was on UK menus. As expected for me the dish was just bland. Not too much to it other than soggy rice. A slight hint of chicken flavour but not enough going for it to win me over. I would not order again.

Ayam Goreng spicy

Lorna:
Essentially fried chicken which I must admit I preferred to KFC! It was moist yet crispy and the coating had the perfect level of spice for me. The only problem was it was very greasy!

Matt:
The chicken was extremely moist for a fast-food establishment. The coating was perfectly crispy too, however a little chalky perhaps. A slow burner with the spice too, not really coming through until you take a break from attacking it! Over all a very good piece of fried chicken.

Chicken rendang pie

Lorna:
This was delicious and so unlike anything I’ve had in McDonald’s UK! It was ultimately a flavorsome, perfectly spicy chicken curry (Malaysian style) inside puff pastry.

Pleasantly surprised by this one! A rich coconut rendang curry, encased in a crisp pastry, delivering both on flavour and texture. A subtle heat runs through the curry too making it a perfect little snack if you didn’t fancy a full meal.

Salted Egg Yolk Loaded fries with chicken bits

Lorna:
Fries in a box topped with mayo, salted egg yolk sauce, and chicken bits. The salted egg yolk sauce tasted like a salty, strong hollandaise with the consistency of squeezy mayonnaise. I was a fan! The chicken bits on top I initially thought would be flakes of southern fried chicken however they were hard small brown squares that look and taste a bit like bacon bits from a packet. But they don’t eat pork here. I have made my own crispy chicken skin before in the oven and it tastes like those did only more “preserved”.
Unfortunately by the time we got to eating them the chips were a bit cold but if we’d had them straight away I’m sure they’d have been miles better.

Fries piled high, covered in a rich salted egg yolk sauce and crispy chicken. What a winning combination! The sauce and the crispy chicken elevates the humble, and frankly underrated McDonald’s fry. Each mouthful varies depending on how many toppings you get. Loaded fries are a winner for me!

Spicy Chicken Mcdeluxe

Lorna:
A chicken burger that tastes like thigh meat, not breast. On the first bite, I felt like it was a bit dry and could do with a bit of mayo. But, when I really got into the middle of the burger the moistness from the thigh meat was more evident but yet again it was quite greasy. Although it didn’t taste bad! The more I ate the more the spice was developing in my mouth but it wasn’t too much for me.

Matt:
Moist chicken burger, with a spicy crust that builds the more you eat. The bun was soft but just enough to keep it all together without falling apart. The only downside, I would say it’s slightly one dimensional, just mayonnaise and lettuce sit with the chicken. A good effort but no chicken legend.

Smoky grilled beef burger

Lorna:
Not for me. A very average joe burger in my opinion. The patty was thin and dry, you could smell the smokiness but it didn’t taste smoky. The sauce had an overly false flavor I didn’t enjoy. The lettuce was sad and onions few and I couldn’t really taste the cheese. There are much better beef burgers on our menu at home.

A single beef Pattie on the signature Mcdonald’s bun. Offered with a smokey sauce, onion, cheese, and lettuce. Personally, the synthetic smoke flavour present in the sauce did not do anything for me. And like the chicken burger, it just lacked a little with the toppings. With no variations in texture. All very one dimensional.

Salted caramel and chocolate pie

Lorna:
Sounded really nice in theory. It was a very hot pastry which was hard to eat. The salted caramel was overpoweringly rich. It looked and tasted like a thick custard. The chocolate itself was the kind you get inside a chocolate croissant but liquidy. The contents had oozed out, I assume as it had been thrown in a fryer to crisp up the pastry. I feel like pastry pockets like this one should be kept for savoury foods. I wouldn’t order it again.

Matt:
All looks, no substance. After catching our eye on the menu, this was something I was actually looking forward to trying. However, the pie failed to deliver on all fronts. The pie crust not to the same standard as the savoury option, and was way more greasy. The filling itself was also a letdown. The chocolate was more like a custard that lacked any real flavour and was completely overpowered by the caramel sauce, which wasn’t all that pleasant.
